Legal vs. morally right

It is not what a lawyer tells me I may do; but what humanity, reason, and justice tell me I ought to do. ~ Edmund Burke

I recently heard this quote mentioned as a line that someone added to the start of each new journal they kept. A reminder of sorts that what is legal is different than what is right. A good reminder to have in a world where people and corporations, Wall Street and the financial system, politicians and governments, seek ways to play just inside the lines of the law. Ways that may be legal but are not morally or ethically right. Ways that hurt others, the economy, the environment, the world. Moving within what is legal is not enough. Moving within what is humane, reasonable, and just is. Live your life by following the latter.
