To a certain extent, in certain ways, the past is always with us. It influences who we are, what we think, how we act. In that way, the past is truly the present. The trick, I think, is not letting it control and define us. Not being trapped by it. It is far too easy to remain in its grip than recognize its influence and loosen its hold.
