I am by all I know a Californian, and by all I imagine a Hoosier.” ~ Jessamyn West
I stared at this quote on the floor of the Eli Lilly Hall in the Indiana Historical Society. I was intrigued…and later discovered that Ms. West was a Quaker from Indiana who moved to California at a young age…and lived out the rest of her life there. A Quaker. I had learned elsewhere in the museum that Quakers in Indiana blocked the attempts of William Henry Harrison, the governor of the Indiana Territory, from successfully legalizing slavery in the state in the early 1800s. Bless the Quakers and their work to block the legalization of slavery as well as their struggle to abolish it elsewhere!
