Movie review: The Secret World of Foley (2014)

I had no idea that such a secret world existed. Sure, I thought that special sounds needed to be added to films. But I never really thought about how or by whom.

Blithely unaware of this secret world or what the heck Foley means, I attended the free First Friday showing of The Secret World of Foley at the Heartland Film theatre.

Rather than talking about it, the film shows it. Movies typically employ Foley artists to create special sounds or to complement existing sounds. The crunch of footsteps on rocky pavement? Made by Foley artists. The sound of water slapping against the boat? Made by Foley artists. The flapping of wings? Made by Foley artists.

The Secret World of Foley shows two sound artists adding sounds to a movie. They are busy at work in a small room. As the movie plays, they replicate the requisite noises with a mishmash of impromptu tools.

This secret world is really quite amazing. This documentary will give you a new appreciation of movies and of the a small segment people that help create them.
